Pumori Expedition
Overview

Makalu is the world’s fifth highest mountain and is located just 14 miles east of Mount Everest. Though the peak appears isolated, its size alone is impressive. It’s perfect pyramid shape with four sharp ridges, makes this mountain all the more spectacular.

The stunning peak of Pumori, lies in the upper Khumbu region of Nepal just eight kilometers west of Mt. Everest. This pyramid of snow and rock dominates the western side of the Khumbu Valley. Known as Everest's daughter, Pumori's view into the Western Cwm of Everest is incredible. Pumori is the most popular mountain for those who whish to climb 7000m peaks in the Nepal Himalaya. The easiest route is graded Class 3 despite being prone to avalanches. Pumori was first climbed in 1962 by a German – Swiss expedition.

The Base Camp will be set up at 5300m. Climb through glaciers for approx. 4 hours to Camp 1 at 5700m. From Camp 1, climb approx. 480m. on the face of a 40-60 degree slope and through a snow wall to Camp II at 6200m on a narrow ridge. Climb approx. 450m. 30-60 degree ice slopes, through ice walls and over crevasses to Camp III at 6480m. . This section is prone to avalanches. Cross more crevasses, and climb up to Pumori Cliff which leads to the summit. For many mountaineers Pumori is the best place to test their technical skills in preparation for climbing the 8000m peaks in the Nepal Himalaya.
