Mustang Explorations
Overview

Mustang trekking, also called Upper Mustang trekking, is an exotic tour to unspoiled Tibetan villages on the other side of Nepalese Himalaya bordering Tibet. The highlights are ancient Tibetan villages, rare medieval Buddhist arts, the exotic culture and the unique beauty of the Himalayan desert. The medieval settlement of Upper Mustang and its capital Lo Manthang lie in the remote Himalayan desert behind the Dhaulagiri and Annapurna mountains. Foreigners were not allowed to enter Upper Mustang until 1992, and as the region has little contact with the rest of Nepal it maintains an aura of a remote, mysterious and unusual land. Geographically, the land is an extension of the Tibetan plateau, characterized by windy and dry valleys, eroded canyons and unique stratified rock formations .The people in Upper Mustang are of Tibetan origin, have migrated centuries ago, and belong to Bhotias and Loba communities. They practice the Sakyapa form of Tibetan Buddhism. Upper Mustang is perhaps the only place to see Tibetan culture in completely undisturbed state. Mostly built of stone and sun baked mud bricks, the houses and monasteries have a medieval look, while the common crops are potatoes, buck wheat and barley. 6000 people live in an area of about 2600 sq km. All their festivals are religious in nature, the Tiji festival being the biggest. This small medieval kingdom in the vast desert is ruled by a local king .The capital, Lo Manthang, a walled complex with the houses of local nobility and monasteries will be one of the highlights of Mustang trekking. In 2007, an international team of explorers discovered priceless objects of cultural and historical importance in Upper Mustang caves, along with Buddhist murals, dating back to, according to them, about 800 years. Mustang trekking will reward you with a rare glimpse a place untouched by the modern world, preserving its ancient Buddhist culture, traditions and invaluable art objects in the high Himalayan desert. Those having longer holiday can extend their trekking beyond Lo Manthang, visiting the caves and further exploring the region’s ancient monasteries and cultural resources. A short 25 minute flight takes you from Pokhara to Jomsom. Hiking along the Kaligandaki gorge, the deepest in the world; head for medieval village of Kagbeni. The trail north of Kagbeni leads to Mustang.
