A Typical Trekking Day - Camping Treks

On a camping holiday, a smiling cook boy’s cheery ‘good morning!’, bed-tea and warm, sterilised washing water herald every new day. Pack up all your gear and put it outside the tent before a hearty breakfast. Put everything you’ll need in your day pack, as your bag will not be accessible until camp. We walk for three to four hours in the cool of the morning, then stop for a hot lunch and a good rest. The afternoon’s walk is usually shorter. Enjoy afternoon tea at camp, then walk, play a game or relax until it’s time for a three-course dinner. After dinner and a briefing from your leader on the next day’s route, reading, playing cards and chatting about the day’s adventures fill the evenings. Early bed is highly recommended! Fill your water bottle immediately after dinner and slip it into your sleeping bag, to make an instant ‘hot water bottle’. The length of each day’s walk varies and your crew is always there to assist and advise. A Sherpa leader ensures that nobody gets lost. Other Sherpas and the Sirdar (chief guide) are distributed among the group and the Leader brings up the rear, with the first-aid kit, chatting to those who like to walk at a more leisurely pace. As veteran travellers know, the journey is always more important than the destination, and in the Himalaya, there is always much to capture your attention on the trails.

AVON rafts, thermal liners, Vango tents, rain jackets, high quality Australian and English sleeping bags, life jackets, helmets, spray jackets, down jackets and fibreglass paddles complete the impressive equipment list.

Environmental Concerns: All environmental policies are strictly adhered to. We were the first company to use kerosene rather than wood-burning stoves. We ‘leave only footprints.

Health, Safety & High Altitude: All trips carry a comprehensive first-aid kit. Oxygen bottles are provided on high altitude treks and a portable high-altitude chamber on ‘Expeditionary’ and Tibet treks. Our staff are trained in wilderness first-aid. Altitude Sickness is no respecter of age or fitness, but serious problems can be avoided by travelling with a company which gives you rest and acclimatisation days. For mild symptoms, a drop in altitude normally leads to a complete recovery. In very rare serious cases, emergency helicopter evacuation is arranged in Nepal, without advance payment or deposit.

Transport: Our own fleet of vehicles ensures comfortable, efficient, safe transport. All Regional International flights to/from Delhi, Lhasa, Paro & all domestic flights and airport taxes (Internal) are included. We issue our own tickets, so you don’t have to wait on someone else’s schedule. (See respective trip dossiers & service inclusions.)

Travelling Alone? You come solo and leave with many new friends. You never have to pay a single supplement on our trips, unless you request special arrangements; we organise sharing throughout.

Travel Insurance: Travel insurance which covers all of your adventure, including helicopter evacuation, is not included, but is compulsory on all AmaDablam Adventure holidays in the Himalaya. Our agents provide the best rates and coverage.

Travelling In ASIA: Travelling in Asia is not like holidaying anywhere in the west. Most Asian countries are under-developed and time has little meaning. While Nepal and her neighbours are known for their friendly people, delays and inefficiency are part of life. Patience, flexibility and a sense of humour will go a long way towards reducing frustration and giving you full enjoyment of your adventure. Because that’s what you’re coming for—an adventure, and an experience unlikely to be had elsewhere.

Trek/Tour/Raft Pack: Our clients have free use of our extensive Trek/ Tour/Raft Pack, according to your chosen adventure(s). This includes a down jacket, sleeping bag (two in winter), thermal liner, inner sleeping bag (for high altitude treks), two sleeping mats, rain jacket or poncho, life jacket, spray jacket and helmet. We even give you a complimentary Duffel Bag and souvenir T-shirt. (See respective trip dossiers.)

Batteries Not Included: The only items not included are personal ones, like alcohol, soft drinks, snacks, laundry, main meals in Kathmandu and other cities, passport and visa fees, passport photos for permits, excess baggage charges, tips and gratuities and international airport departure taxes. Check what others provide and you will know how much you will be saving by booking on one of our trips. Don’t be caught out; you could easily spend much more booking elsewhere.

Staff Welfare: We insure all our staff and provide porters with warm high altitude gear, blankets, boots, jackets, trousers, gloves, socks, snow goggles etc., as well as their wages and food. Their well-being is very important to us. We even arrange and pay for, unlike other companies, helicopter evacuations for staff in times of emergency.

WHY CAMPING? Camping with AmaDablam Adventures doesn’t mean ‘roughing it’ or being uncomfortable. Our equipment is state-of-the-art, our crew are highly trained and experienced, and what our cooks can produce in the remotest of areas will amaze you. AmaDablam’s self-contained crews can take you safely and comfortably just about anywhere in the Himalaya. As we carry all our equipment and food and provide all the necessary staff, we are not tied to the ‘beaten track’, even in the most popular trekking areas.

WHY LODGES? There are now so many good lodges on the main trekking trails in Annapurna, Everest and Langtang that it makes sense to use these facilities where they exist. It’s cheaper for you, as we don’t need to use a large, self-contained crew to carry all the food and equipment. As most lodges are family-run, it gives you a unique opportunity to interact with local people. Of course, you still have the security of the services of AmaDablam’s expert and caring staff; you just won’t be sleeping in a tent.

Check if others include what we do on Camping & Lodge Treks, then you will know how much you will be saving by booking on one of our trips. Don’t be caught out as you could easily be spending $1000s or more by booking elsewhere on so-called ‘Special Value’ Treks.
